So fa so good September 7, 2010 Stacy S. Hahn (Durango, CO) We recently purchased this camera and I have to say it's been really fun to use. We have had no problems with it so far. It just takes awhile to get used to the small size. You can't move it quickly or the picture jumps around. My kids took it under water and it worked great.
Kodak PlaySport handheld video camera September 7, 2010 E. ONeill (Dubuque, IA) This unit is well constructed and significantly smaller than the previous Zi-6 and Zi-8 cameras.
The battery and SDHC changes easily and the settings options on the camera are clear cut.
I wish that minutes of battery usage left could be displayed like they are on the larger camcorders.
Another nice feature would be total percentage of space used on the SDHC. Overall, I have tested
the video during boating, fly fishing and other action sports and it has functioned well. I would recommed this
product for anyone who travels or engages in water sporting activites.
Zoom is Worthless September 7, 2010 F. Kirschbaum (Wayne, PA) The still pictures are terrible and the digital zoom is horrific. I bought to capture a few trips to the water park. It did that okay. The lack of a quality zoom is huge deterrent.
disappointing... September 5, 2010 trancemuter I was very excited about this camera before I got it then I had to find out that it's kind of a deception. The problems are the following:
1. It's not true HD the only usable format to shoot with is the 720p 60fps, that looks decent, the 720p 30fps format is very jerky, looks like 15fps and the 1080p 30fps is very choppy, unusable, and it is interpolated in the camera software or something because the quality of the picture is not very good it definitely doesn't look full HD. To add to the problems, when you switch to 1080p you loose about 40-50% of the field of view I have no idea why, it's like you zoom in the middle of the picture all the way. It sucks!
2. The other major flaw with the camera is the focus range of the lens, the minimum focus distance is 3.3 ft (1m) and underwater becomes 4.4 ft (1.4m) that means you can't hold the camera in your hand and shoot yourself, it will be out of focus especially under water. Macro is also nonexistent, just imagine, you have to be 3.3 ft from the object to have it focused. This really turns me off, even the old Iphone has a better lens the focus range with 9 inch to infinity!!!! Iphone 4's camera beats this camera in every aspect.
3. the low light performance is very very bad, super noisy!
I think that this camera could have had a great potential but I feel deceived by Kodak, it's not a true 1080p camera even though they market it that way, it's a pure lie from their part, the good things about it are that it is waterproof and it shoots a decent 720p 60fps. I would return it if I could and wait until some other company comes out with a better product.
If you are looking for a toy camera you can use without worry that you could buy this camera, just don't expect to much from it. Hope this helps other people not to be deceived by this product I only wish somebody would have written about this before I bought it.
Great for Special Vacations! September 3, 2010 jl1 I bought this for my new husband to take on our honeymoon to Hawaii for our wet/underwater adventures. It worked great! But first, the bad/needs improvement issues: There was only one problem that we had, after shooting some video, the system locked up and the recording seemed as if it wouldn't stop. After a hard reboot (removing the battery to turn off, then restarting it), it worked fine and all the pics and video were still there. Of course, if you were underwater at the time something like this happened, it would be a much bigger problem. But, we used this device for the entire trip, and that was the only problem we had. The other thing that Kodak could improve upon is to add a tightener to the strap for the camera. It's great they included a strap, but it is still quite loose, and if you are using the camera on a boat or while snorkeling like we were, it is most likely going to slip off your wrist at some point. We solved this problem by creating our own strap tightener with a hair band, however it would be nice if Kodak would address this easy to fix (and most likely extremely cheap to fix) issue.
That being said, the video quality is fantastic with this little guy. You DO have to be aware of how fast you are moving the camera while shooting a video, you have to keep it at a pretty slow, steady motion, but that is really to be expected, not sure why anyone would be surprised about that. The camera also takes really great outdoor and underwater still pictures. I would highly recommend this purchase to anyone who wants to capture really special trips. This is not a camera for every day usage (unless you happen to be underwater every day), but it is a must have for wet or underwater adventures!!!
